Origins:
Abaluhya people are thought to have originated from (Misri) Egypt and settled in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. They are part of the Bantu migration that dispersed and occupied large swathes of eastern, central and southern Africa. The Luhya tongue or variations of it is widely spoken in these countries. The Luhya are peace loving people typically wishing everyone milembe (peace). Among their cousins are the Kisii and Basuba of Kenya, Baganda, Banyankole and Banyoro of Uganda and a cluster of Nyanja-speaking tribes in Zambia. MORE>>>

Oluhya is fire: The name Luhya was first suggested by a local African Mutual Assistance Association around 1930 and when in postwar colonial period, it was found to be politically advantageous to possess a super tribal identity; the Luhya had emerged as a national group. The word "Oluyia" means fireplace. At more than 5 million, the Luhya are Kenya's second largest tribe after the Kikuyu. They live in the western and Rift Valley provinces. The sub tribes of Maragoli and Banyore occupy what is the world's most densely populated rural region. They are mainly subsistence farmers and fishermen - growing maize, beans, millet, sorghum and cassava while the people of Bunyala are great sculptors. More>>>
